How to Wash Your Hands – WHO Video

Washing your hands is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and others from illnesses such as food poisoning and flu.

You should wash your hands for the amount of time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice (around 20 seconds):

  • 1. Wet your hands with water.
  • 2. Apply enough soap to cover your hands.
  • 3. Rub your hands together.
  • 4. Use 1 hand to rub the back of the other hand and clean in between the fingers. Do the same with the other hand.
  • 5. Rub your hands together and clean in between your fingers.
  • 6. Rub the back of your fingers against your palms.
  • 7. Rub your thumb using your other hand. Do the same with the other thumb.
  • 8. Rub the tips of your fingers on the palm of your other hand. Do the same with other hand.
  • 9. Rinse your hands with water.
  • 10. Dry your hands completely with a disposable towel.
  • 11. Use the disposable towel to turn off the tap.

When should you wash your hands?

You should wash your hands:

  • after using the toilet or changing a nappy
  • before and after handling raw foods like meat and vegetables
  • before eating or handling food
  • after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing
  • before and after treating a cut or wound
  • after touching animals, including pets, their food and after cleaning their cages

Washing your hands properly removes dirt, viruses and bacteria to stop them spreading to other people and objects, which can spread illnesses such as food poisoning, flu or diarrhoea.

It can help stop people picking up infections and spreading them to others.

It can also help stop spreading infections when you’re visiting someone in hospital or another healthcare setting.

What the pHeck?

What the pHeck? What the pHeck?

This is a short article about Skin, Scalp & Hair pH.

pH is simply the potential for hydrogen and is a measure of how acid or alkali a substance is. Keeping the balance right is important for overall health & well being and this article arms you with all the facts you need.

pH is defined on a scale between 0 and 14. Anything between 0 and 6.9 is acidic, 7 is neutral, and anything between 7.1 and 14 is alkaline.

Interestingly, human skin has a normal range of between 4 and 6.5 whilst Human hair and scalp oil, sebum, has a pH balance of between 4.5 and 5.5. This natural acidity wards off harmful fungi and bacteria on the skin, hair and scalp, and keeps the cuticle layer of the hair closed and healthy. In turn this adds strength and shine.

Structure of hair.

The hair shaft is comprised of three layers: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla.

The cuticle is the hair’s outer most layer which has shingle or scale like cells that overlap. These cells work defensively to prevent damage to the hair’s inner structure and to control water content of hair. The shingle like cells of the cuticle layer point toward the ends of the hair and are raised after washing. Therefore, effective conditioning is very important to restore the natural pH of the scalp and hair as all detergents (Soaps & Shampoos) are alkaline. Most importantly, good conditioning adds strength and shine by closing the cuticle. We recommend using our natural Aloe Vera Hair & Scalp Serum immediately after washing your hair. Massage a small amount into the scalp & damp hair, working from the roots to tip. Either rinse out after 5 minutes, otherwise just leave it in and style your hair as normal. Our serum leaves hair feeling smooth and healthy.

Why Aloe Vera?

Because aloe vera contains 75 potentially active constituents: vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids and amino acids and it contains vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and E, which are antioxidants , it has been widely used for centuries. Aloe vera also contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, and B12 that help in the detoxifying process. Specifically, vitamin B12 is vital for nucleic acid synthesis. In conclusion, It’s good stuff.
